Socrative (free) is a clicker-response system similar to those used with interactive whiteboards. One app is downloaded to students' tablets, smartphones, laptops, or iPods, and the other is downloaded on the teacher's system. Students respond to multiple-choice, true/false, short-answer, quiz-game questions, and exit tickets. Those real-time responses project anonymously. Results are displayed as bar graphs and can be exported as Excel or Google reports. It works well in most wifi-enabled rooms and is available for iOS and Android.
A negative is that no more than 50 students can participate at one time.
A review from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln states, "Socrative allows instructors to create quizzes that are not anonymous. In this system, student responses are not projected publicly. Rather, as the students finish the instructor sees real-time completion and correctness data. That data—including each student's individual score—is exported to an Excel spreadsheet and emailed to the instructor."
